Every hide is ethically sourced from South America as a by-product of the meat industry. Selected with a deep sense of intention, each hide forms part of our collections in a cohesive and considered way, ensuring that our process prioritises sustainability at every intersection.

At Weylandts, the use of leather is a defining part of our heritage. From the start of the journey, Chris’ father explored the use of wild hides for furniture, setting the foundation for leather to become one of Weylandts’ signature textiles.
We approach our design process with the same level of commitment. First, we start by crafting the soul of the leather. Each hide is designed and curated to suit the exact needs of the unique furniture piece in mind.
From there, we partner closely with a family-run tannery in South Africa who work carefully with full grain leathers, buffing them by hand to expose the natural markings and histories of each individual hide.
Our focus on local production and family tradition allows us to maintain a small batch philosophy in an effort to set the tone for sustainable practices countrywide.
About Our Leathers
Leather is a natural material characterised by the unique tones and individual markings an animal acquires during its lifespan. This includes creases, stretchmarks, scars, insect bites and brand marks. At Weylandts, we use natural aniline full-grain leather. The hide is hand-dyed using vegetable oil and state-of-the-art equipment. Different sections of the hide will have variances in colour and grain. Over time, the leather will wear and change appearance and develop its own distinctive patina. Contact with your skin, daylight and interior lighting will affect the leather.

Aniline Dyeing
All our leathers are prepared and hand-dyed in Namibia in accordance with multi-step preparatory and tanning processes. By using vegetable oils and state-of-the-art equipment, the leather’s natural surface is retained. The end result is a sofa that is both soft and pleasant to the touch and has a natural lived-in look that only gets better over time.
Natural Markings
Wrinkles, scars, brand and tick bite marks and colour variations are all-natural characteristics of African bovine full-grain leather. They can appear as inconsistencies on the surface of the leather with a lighter or darker shading. These are not seen as defects but as qualities that add to the authenticity and beauty of each hide.
Inspired by the Landscape
The African landscape is rich and varied. The colours of our leather ranges are inspired by the subtle variations in tone and raw textures of the continent. By looking at nature, we can create leather pieces that are both timeless and contemporary in their authenticity.

At Weylandts, we celebrate the unique characteristics of every leather hide. There are many ways to treat leather, but we prefer to use only natural aniline full-grain leather.
In short, it means we don’t hide or cover up parts of the leather artificially to make it look ‘perfect’. Instead, we use only high-quality bovine leathers and finish it in a way that showcases it in all its natural variation and beauty.
