NATURE’S WAY
Renewed by nature and human ingenuity for millennia.
Using natural fibres from various flora to create something precious and functional is akin to alchemy. The complexity of these weaves and the skill with which they are treated make weaving one of the core techniques used throughout our Weylandts collections.
About Our Natural Fibres
Bamboo
Bamboo is part of the grass family. Unlike rattan (which is solid), bamboo has a hollow centre. It's extremely fast-growing, absorbs carbon dioxide and releases 35% more oxygen into the atmosphere than hardwood trees. These characteristics have given it an excellent reputation as an environmentally friendly and renewable resource. Bamboo is light, pliable and durable.
Rattan
Rattan, or climbing palm – as it acts more like a vine than a tree – grows fast and abundantly in Southeast Asia. The rapid growth rate makes it a very renewable material. Rattan and cane is the same plant. However, we refer to cane as the thinner material that results from the process of stripping the rattan palm of its thick, outer peel.
Abaca
The abaca plant is native to the Philippines and East Indonesia. It's closely related to and resembles the banana plant. It's often referred to as Manila hemp. The fibre is extracted from the leaf sheaf that is around the trunk of the plant and can be harvested every three to eight months, making it a very sustainable fibre choice.
Water Hyacinth
Water hyacinth is a versatile material crafted from stems that have been rolled into rope and used to create intricate weaves. This eco-conscious approach transforms water hyacinth, a natural resource, into exquisite textures that elevate our homeware products.
Jute
Jute, a natural fibre renowned for its durability and sustainability, plays a pivotal role in our homeware products. Sourced responsibly, this versatile material is woven into a variety of textures and patterns. Used mainly for our collection of rugs and baskets, jute fuses sustainable design with style.
