About us

A STORY OF GOOD LIVING

From its humble beginnings in 1964 as a traditional furniture store in Windhoek, Namibia, Weylandts has grown into South Africa’s leading furniture and homeware retailer with 10 stores nationwide.

Inheriting his father’s eye for extraordinary furniture and an appreciation of good living in its widest sense, Chris Weylandt has developed the brand into one that’s synonymous with bold, confident aesthetics and timeless taste. At the heart of Weylandts’ aesthetic vision is the unique fusion of clean, contemporary design with the soul of natural material.

With an infrastructure that enables us to manufacture, source and import furniture and homeware from every corner of the globe, Weylandts established itself as a brand with a reputation of merging the best handcrafted traditions from around the world with the confidence of masculine minimalist design.

In line with our philosophy of good living, the Weylandts brand extends to Weylandts Spaces, a bespoke interior design and concept service, and the Maison Estate in Franschhoek — home to a collection of superb wines and a fine dining restaurant. Our in-store experience includes The Kitchen restaurants and niche coffee bars at selected stores — bringing to life our vision of celebrating good living with all the senses.

The Weylandts Timeline

1964

The Story begins

Edgar Weylandt opens the very first Weylandts store in Windhoek, Namibia, selling quality imported furniture from Europe, South America and the rest of Africa that he sources through his extensive travels. In the same year, Edgar’s son, Chris Weylandt, is born.

1990

Chris Weylandt gets hands-on

After completing his studies in South Africa, Chris visits his family in Windhoek en route to Europe. What was intended as a ‘brief detour’ turns into five years as Chris takes a keen interest in the family business and gains valuable experience.

1992 – 1996

The First Manufacturing Plant

In 1992, Chris and his older brother, Thomas, buys a small manufacturing plant in Okahandja, Namibia and expands the plant to provide stock for the Windhoek shop. They also start exporting to South Africa. In 1996, Chris sets up a plant in Cape Town — developing and manufacturing a complete new range for furniture.

1997 – 1999

The Indonesian Influence & The First Retail Store

Chris travels to Indonesia to source new ranges for Weylandts. He decides to take Weylandts into the retail arena. In 1999, the first Weylandts Homestore opens in Durbanville, Cape Town. This 2 500m2, six-level store is an instant success — selling an extensive range of Indonesian furniture as well as new ranges designed and manufactured by Weylandts.

2001 – 2002

Groundbreaking Stores in Green Point & Knysna

A warehouse in Green Point, Cape Town, is renovated and converted into a
3 000m2 industrial destination store. The Knysna store opens in an old boatshed on the trendy new Thesen Island in 2002.

2003

Taking On Gauteng

Our first Gauteng store — a 3 500m2, three-level showroom opens in Fourways. This three-level store offers Weylandts customers a retail furniture shopping experience like they haven’t seen before in this province.

2004

Remote Chinese & Philippine Influence

Chris travels to remote regions in China and sources antique pieces to complement the clean, contemporary Weylandts designs. Weylandts also starts importing vibrant and edgy designer pieces, like the award-winning Egg Table, from the Philippines.

2009

Brooklyn & KZN Stores Open

Weylandts expands to two exciting new locations: the open-air Brooklyn Design Square in Pretoria, and Umhlanga Ridge in KZN, a 1 400m2 space that showcases Weylandts’ eclectic range of original designs, antique treasures and unusual ethnic art works.

2010

Kramerville & The Kitchen at Weylandts

We further expand our Gauteng presence with a new store in the vibrant, redeveloped Kramerville suburb in Johannesburg. In line with our philosophy of good living, we also open The Kitchen at Weylandts in Durbanville — a chic fusion bistro that adds further sophistication to the unique Weylandts shopping experience. The concept takes off and we roll it out into four other stores over the next few years.

2013

First Store Down Under & Clothing Range

We expand to our second continent and open a store in Australia’s design capital, Melbourne. The same year the TM Collection is launched. This nomadic-spirited clothing range adds yet another layer to the richly textured Weylandts palette.

2015

New Head Office, Weylandts Spaces & Nelspruit

Our new Head Office, an innovative, custom-designed working space in Northgate Park is featured in South Africa’s most prominent design publications. At the same time Weylandts Spaces is launched. Under the guidance of Chris Weylandt this bespoke interior design & concept division brings the personal vision of clients to life. The long-awaited Nelspruit store also opens its doors — Weylandts now has stores in 4 provinces in South Africa.

2017

Timothy Oulton Gallery & Sandton City Concept Store

After stocking Timothy Oulton’s iconic vintage modern furniture for several years, we open an exclusive Timothy Oulton Gallery in our Fourways store to showcase this innovative British brand. We also open our first concept store at Sandton City — a luxury, hotel-themed store complete with a champagne bar which takes retail furniture and homeware shopping to a whole new level of sophistication.

Our Brand Pillars

Weylandts is an authentic and masculine brand with soul. Its four
pillars are reflected in everything Weylandts does: From product design, sourcing and manufacture to store ambience and service.

Sustainability

Mother nature gives us gifts of infinite beauty. Respect is all she asks in return.

Design

Design that inspires others to live well, is the kind of design that inspires most of all.

Value

An object presents value when the quality, the detail and the craftsmanship are of greater worth than the numbers on the price tag.

Quality

Quality should never be a once-off act, but a habit. Something you do, even when no one’s looking.
