Originating from the 1920s, this hand-carved panel from Nagaland is a remarkable piece crafted from durable Sal wood, known for its strength and resilience. The panel is made from a single log of wood, a distinctive feature of Naga craftsmanship, where no nails or patchwork are used, ensuring its uniqueness and authenticity. Serving as a totem, this panel symbolised the status and achievements of its owner within the community. It was believed that the totem's owner had performed good deeds and contributed positively to the community. The carvings often depicted water buffaloes, an important symbol in Naga culture, alongside the heads of family members, signifying lineage and honour. This striking piece offers both cultural significance and exceptional craftsmanship, making it a powerful addition to any collection or space.
